JDM car rental in Tokyo: the rules, the real costs, and when a passenger tour is the better deal
Renting a JDM car in Tokyo is the dream for a lot of visitors and a hard 'no' at the counter for a surprising number of them. This page is the checklist we wish every guest had read before arriving — plus a straight comparison with the option that has no checklist at all.

First, the document that decides everything
Japan recognises three things at a rental counter: a Japanese licence; an International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention, carried together with your home licence and passport; or a licence from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, Taiwan or Estonia accompanied by an official Japanese translation. Nothing else works — not a 1968 Vienna Convention IDP, not a home licence from China, Brazil, Vietnam or Indonesia, not an app, not a photocopy. The IDP must be issued in your own country before you fly; it cannot be obtained in Japan. Full rules, country by country, in our ride-in-a-GT-R guide.
What JDM rental in Tokyo typically involves
| Item | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Cars | Silvia, 86/BRZ, Supra, RX-7, Skyline (R32–R34), GT-R R35, Kei sports cars; availability varies by company and day |
| Rate | Hourly, half-day or daily; higher for R34s and R35s |
| Deposit | Held on a credit card; often large, sometimes six figures in yen for GT-Rs |
| Extras | Expressway tolls, fuel (returned full), parking, insurance/waiver, sometimes a young-driver or short-licence surcharge |
| Restrictions | Minimum age and licence-held period; some companies exclude expressway or night use, or set mileage limits, for high-value cars |
| Hours | Mostly daytime pick-up and return; overnight is rarer and pricier |
| Driving | Left-hand traffic, strict enforcement, Japanese-language signage on the expressway network |
We deliberately do not publish other companies' prices here; they change and we would be quoting them from the outside. Ask the rental company for the all-in figure including deposit hold, tolls and fuel — that is the number to compare.
The Daikoku problem
Most people renting a JDM car in Tokyo want one thing from it: Daikoku PA at night. Three things make that harder than it sounds in a rental. Daikoku is reachable only from the expressway, in one direction, and easy to miss. Its entrance is closed by police without notice on the busiest nights — typically the same Friday and Saturday nights a visitor would choose. And many daytime rental slots end before the meet even begins. Our Daikoku car meet guide and schedule cover the timing; the short version is that a weeknight after 20:00 is the safest bet, and a driver who goes every week is the safest of all.
Rental vs passenger tour, decided by one question
Do you need to be the one driving? If yes and you have the document, rent. If no, or the document is the problem, a passenger tour gives you the same car, the same road, the same Daikoku, at night, with none of the paperwork.
| JDM self-drive rental | GTR MAFIA TOKYO passenger tour | |
|---|---|---|
| Licence / IDP | Required and checked | Not needed |
| Deposit | Yes | None |
| Total cost | Rate + deposit hold + tolls + fuel + parking + insurance | ¥26,000 or ¥36,000 per person, all-inclusive |
| Car | Whatever the company has that day | Skyline or GT-R always (Random Plan: R32/R33/R34/R34 GT-R/R35; Premium: R34 GT-R or R35 guaranteed) |
| Night / Daikoku | Depends on slot, navigation and closures | 19:00 departure, Daikoku by ~19:50, Umihotaru fallback if closed |
| Group of three | Per-car cost splits well | Per person; three guests fit one car |
| Solo traveller | Pays for the whole car | Pays for one seat |
Compare with go-karts, drift taxis and circuit days in every Tokyo car experience compared, and see who a GT-R tour is worth it for and who should skip it.
If you rent anyway: five tips from people who drive these roads weekly
- Get the 1949-format IDP at home and photograph it, your licence and your passport together — counters want all three.
- Ask for the all-in cost including the deposit hold; the headline rate is rarely half of it.
- Book a weekday afternoon-into-evening slot if you want Daikoku; Friday and Saturday nights carry the highest closure risk.
- Set the satnav to "Daikoku PA (大黒PA)" on the Bayshore Route (K5/Wangan) heading toward Yokohama; there is one entrance.
- Photograph the car all round before you leave the lot. Deposits and cameras go together.
Frequently asked questions
Can foreigners rent JDM cars in Tokyo?
Yes, with a Japanese licence, a 1949-Geneva International Driving Permit obtained at home, or a licence from Switzerland, Germany, France, Belgium, Monaco, Taiwan or Estonia with an official Japanese translation. Visitors without one of these cannot rent; a passenger tour is the alternative.
What licence do I need to rent a car in Japan?
A Japanese licence, or a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP with your home licence and passport, or a recognised foreign licence with official Japanese translation. 1968 Vienna Convention IDPs are not accepted.
How much does JDM car rental cost in Tokyo?
It depends on the car and the company. Budget for the rental rate plus a security deposit hold, expressway tolls, fuel, parking and insurance or waiver fees. Ask for the all-in figure. A GTR MAFIA TOKYO passenger tour is 26,000 to 36,000 yen per person with all of that included.
Can I drive a rented JDM car to Daikoku PA at night?
If your rental slot covers the evening and the company permits expressway use, yes. Daikoku is reachable only from the Bayshore Route and is closed by police on some busy nights, so weeknights are safer. A guided tour removes the navigation and timing risk.
Is it better to rent a JDM car or take a tour in Tokyo?
Rent if driving is the point and you hold a valid licence or 1949 IDP. Take a passenger tour if you cannot drive in Japan, want night and Daikoku PA without navigation risk, or are travelling solo or as a couple, where per-person pricing beats paying for a whole car.
Does GTR MAFIA TOKYO offer JDM car rental?
No. GTR MAFIA TOKYO is a chauffeured passenger experience in Nissan Skyline and GT-R cars only. No licence, IDP or deposit is needed because guests do not drive.
Can I rent a Skyline GT-R in Japan?
Some rental companies offer R32, R33 or R34 Skylines with strict conditions and high deposits. Alternatively, GTR MAFIA TOKYO's Premium Plan guarantees a ride in an R34 GT-R or R35 GT-R for 36,000 yen per person with no licence required.
