R33 Skyline GT-R: The Complete Guide

Criticised for being bigger, dismissed for not being an R32, and quietly the most capable RB26 chassis Nissan had built to that point. Thirty years later the R33's case is much stronger than its reputation — and it is still the cheapest way into a real Skyline GT-R.

The criticism, stated fairly

It is worth setting out the case against the R33 honestly, because the article that just defends it without acknowledging the complaint is not worth reading.

The R33 GT-R arrived in January 1995 following a car that had won 29 consecutive races and taken Bathurst twice. Expectations were not moderate. What Nissan delivered was 105 mm more wheelbase, roughly 130 mm more length, and around 100 kg more mass. It looked softer. The styling was rounder and less aggressive than the R32's hard, boxy stance, and to a lot of people it read as a grand tourer where its predecessor had read as a homologation special.

There was also no racing programme to give it meaning. Group A had effectively collapsed in Japan — in large part because the R32 had destroyed it — so the R33 had no championship to dominate and no equivalent of Bathurst to win. Nismo campaigned a GT-R LM at Le Mans in 1995 and 1996, but that was a heavily modified silhouette car and it never captured the public imagination the way the Group A cars had.

So the enthusiast press had a bigger, heavier car with the same quoted 280 PS and no trophies, and it said so. That verdict then calcified. By the time the R34 arrived in 1999 with a shorter wheelbase, a much stiffer shell and a Getrag six-speed, the narrative was fixed: the R33 was the fat one in the middle.

Why that criticism is now considered unfair

Three things have changed the assessment.

The extra length was engineering, not laziness

The longer wheelbase was not an accident of platform sharing that Nissan tolerated — it was a stability decision the chassis engineers wanted. A longer wheelbase reduces a car's tendency to react abruptly to mid-corner inputs and makes it more settled at high speed. The R32 is the more agile car and it is also the more nervous one; drive both quickly on an unfamiliar road and the R33 is noticeably the one that stays composed. The R34 subsequently split the difference, shortening the wheelbase again while retaining the structural improvements — which is itself an admission that the R33's platform work was worth keeping.

The body was substantially stiffer

Torsional rigidity is invisible on a spec sheet and it is the single biggest determinant of how a car actually behaves. The R33 shell is significantly stiffer than the R32's, which is why the suspension can be tuned to do its job rather than fighting the body. Nissan also improved the aerodynamics — the R33 GT-R's drag coefficient is usually given as around 0.35 against roughly 0.40 for the R32, with real downforce generated at both ends.

Nobody was actually comparing like with like

In 1995 the R32 was already six years old and had a mythology attached to it. The R33 was being measured against a memory, not a car. Journalists who drove them back to back later, without the racing halo in the way, tended to be far kinder — and the tuning industry, which cares about outcomes rather than romance, was happy with the R33 from the start because the chassis tolerated big power better than the R32's did.

None of this makes the R33 the best Skyline GT-R. It makes it a good one that was judged against an unreasonable standard. If you want the sharpest, most involving RB26 car, buy an R32. If you want the most complete one, buy an R34 and expect to pay for it. If you want the most car for the money, the R33 has been the answer for twenty years.

ATTESA E-TS Pro and the active LSD

Every Skyline GT-R uses ATTESA E-TS: a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system that runs the car as a rear-drive coupe until the electronics decide otherwise, then feeds up to 50 percent of the torque forward through a hydraulic multi-plate clutch. It reads wheel-speed sensors and a pair of accelerometers, and it acts before the driver knows anything has happened.

ATTESA E-TS Pro, fitted to the R33 V-spec, adds an electronically controlled active limited-slip differential at the rear axle. The distinction matters. Standard E-TS can only decide how much torque goes to the front axle; E-TS Pro can also decide how torque is split between the two rear wheels, and it does so in concert with the front-rear split rather than independently of it.

In practice this changes what the car does at the exit of a corner. A conventional mechanical LSD reacts to slip that has already begun. An active unit can pre-load itself based on steering angle, throttle position and lateral load, so the R33 V-spec does not so much recover traction as never visibly lose it. Combined with the longer wheelbase, it is the reason experienced drivers describe the R33 V-spec as the RB26 car you can drive hardest with the least drama.

The system was introduced on the R32 V-spec in 1993 rather than invented for the R33, but the R33 installation is the refined version, and the R34 V-spec inherited it directly.

The 7:59 Nürburgring lap

Nissan publicised a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap of 7 minutes 59 seconds for the R33 GT-R, marketed it as the first production car to break the eight-minute barrier, and framed it as roughly 21 seconds quicker than the R32. In Japan the figure became part of the car's identity — the R33 was the eight-minute Skyline.

The honest framing is this: it was a manufacturer-run lap, publicised by the manufacturer, not an independently timed comparison test, and the usual scepticism that applies to all factory Nordschleife claims applies here too. Nissan has never released full verification of it.

What is genuinely significant, and less often discussed, is that Nissan did serious development work at the Nordschleife for the R33 at all. In the mid-1990s the Green Hell was a European manufacturers' proving ground, and a Japanese company shipping cars and engineers there to spend real time on setup was unusual. That programme is the reason the R33 is the stable, high-speed-composed car that it is, and it is the direct ancestor of the Nürburgring obsession that later defined the R35 and gave the R34 its Nür-badged final editions.

The R33 GT-R also went through a facelift in early 1997, generally referred to as the Series 3 cars, with revised lights and detail changes. As with the other generations, none of the mainstream variants advertised more than 280 PS, because none of them were allowed to.

The Autech Version 40th Anniversary deserves a mention on its own. It is a four-door saloon with the full RB26DETT and ATTESA E-TS drivetrain — the only factory-backed four-door GT-R ever made — built to mark forty years of the Skyline name. Purists argue about whether it counts as a real GT-R because Autech assembled it. It is nonetheless the only way to put four adults in an RB26-powered Skyline GT-R with dignity.

The Nismo 400R

The 400R is the R33's answer to anyone who says the generation lacked a halo car, and it is one of the rarest Nissans of the era.

NISMO — Nissan's in-house motorsport arm — took the BCNR33 and replaced the RB26DETT with an enlarged 2.8-litre unit designated RBX-GT2, using a longer-stroke crankshaft along with strengthened internals and larger turbochargers. NISMO quoted 400 PS and 470 Nm, a figure it was free to publish because the 400R was sold as a NISMO complete car rather than as a Nissan model subject to the 280 PS advertising agreement. The name is simply the power output.

The rest of the car was reworked to match: wider bespoke bodywork, a carbon fibre bonnet, a carbon rear spoiler blade, revised aerodynamics, uprated suspension and brakes, a strengthened drivetrain and a bespoke exhaust. NISMO planned 100 cars and completed 44 before the programme ended. They very rarely come to market, and when they do they trade for more than any R34 short of a Nür.

If you have seen a wide-arched blue R33 with a carbon bonnet in a game or on a poster and wondered what it was, this is almost certainly it.

The best-value RB26 GT-R

Here is the argument in plain terms. All three RB26 Skyline GT-Rs share the same fundamentals: a 2,568 cc twin-turbo iron-block straight-six with six individual throttle bodies, ATTESA E-TS rear-biased all-wheel drive, Super-HICAS four-wheel steering, and the same 280 PS advertising fiction. The differences between them are chassis tuning, gearbox, equipment and — overwhelmingly — reputation.

The R34 costs what it costs because of 2 Fast 2 Furious, Gran Turismo, an 11,578-car production run and twenty-five years of American buyers unable to have one. The R32 costs what it costs because it won everything and became legal to import into the United States in 2014. The R33 had neither event. It has never been in a film that mattered, it never won a championship, and it became fully US-legal in November 2023 with almost nobody watching.

What that means for a buyer is straightforward: you get the identical engine, the identical drivetrain philosophy, a stiffer shell than the R32 and — in V-spec form — the active differential, for consistently less money than either sibling. Note also that the R34 is heavier than the R33, which surprises people who have absorbed the R33-is-the-fat-one narrative without checking it.

The R33 is also, for now, the least speculated-upon of the three. That will not last forever, but it is true today.

Riding an R33 in Tokyo

The tour is three hours. Standard departure is 19:00 from Shibuya, onto the Shuto Expressway and the Bayshore Route, around an hour at Daikoku PA — the ring-shaped parking area beneath the interchange that has become Japan's most famous informal car meet — then Tokyo Tower and back to Shibuya by roughly 22:00. When Daikoku is closed we run to Umihotaru PA in the middle of Tokyo Bay instead.

No driving licence is required; guests travel as passengers, so there is no international permit to organise and no left-hand-drive adjustment to make. The long, stable R33 is genuinely well suited to the Bayshore Route, which is a fast, sweeping elevated road rather than a twisty one — the exact conditions its longer wheelbase was designed for. Why do people say the R33 GT-R is the worst Skyline GT-R?

Almost entirely because of its size. The R33 GT-R has a 2,720 mm wheelbase against the R32's 2,615 mm and weighs roughly 100 kg more, and in 1995 an enthusiast press that had just spent six years worshipping the compact R32 read those numbers as a betrayal. The reputation was formed on paper before most journalists had driven the car hard, and it hardened into received wisdom. Owners and engineers have argued for decades that it was never a fair verdict.

How many R33 Skyline GT-Rs were built?

Approximately 16,600 BCNR33 Skyline GT-Rs were built between January 1995 and November 1998. That is far fewer than the R32's roughly 43,900 but more than the R34's roughly 11,578, which puts the R33 in the odd position of being the middle child in both chronology and rarity.

Did the R33 GT-R really lap the Nürburgring in under 8 minutes?

Is the R33 GT-R the cheapest way to buy a real RB26 GT-R?

Generally yes. The R33 GT-R consistently trades below both the R32 and the R34 despite having the same 2,568 cc RB26DETT engine, the same ATTESA E-TS all-wheel drive and Super-HICAS four-wheel steering, and a stiffer, more stable chassis than the R32. It is the only one of the three that has never had a cultural moment inflating its price, which is precisely why it remains the value entry point into genuine Skyline GT-R ownership.

Can an R33 GT-R be imported into the USA?

Yes, and every one of them is now eligible. The United States 25-year rule measures eligibility by month of manufacture. R33 GT-R production ran from January 1995 to November 1998, so the earliest cars became importable in January 2020 and the very last of them cleared in November 2023. Unlike the R34, where cars built after August 2002 are still waiting, there is no R33 GT-R left that an American buyer has to wait for.

How much heavier is the R33 GT-R than the R32?

Around 100 kg. A standard R32 GT-R weighs roughly 1,430 kg and a standard R33 GT-R roughly 1,540 kg. It gives away some of the R32's immediacy and darting agility, and it is not as sharp or as well finished as the R34.
